The grade 6 students of Mrs. Marie-Alixe Archer and Mrs. Eirini Tourkomanoli of Socrates II, as well as those of the secondary school, with Mr. Éric Loustau and the director, Mrs Georgia Tsakalis, participated with much grace, in the celebrations marking Remembrance Day 2016.
The Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal and our students accepted an invitation from the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal to attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at Mount Royal Cemetery. Surrounded by tombstones they participated in all activities: a moment of silence in the cemetery gardens, followed by a medal ceremony for the veterans still alive and their deceased brothers in arms.
Our students did a splendid job. Some of them recited the poem of Odysseas Elytis, Nobel Prize winner of literature: “Heroic and funereal song for the lieutenant lost in Albania”.
The ceremon,y charged with emotion, ended with the deposit of the crowns. Our students were accompanied by Mr. Nicholaos Segalas, Greek Consul in Montreal, Mr. Spyros Montsenigos, Secretary of Community and Public Relations of the Board of Directors of HCGM, and Mr. Theofanis Montis, himself a veteran of the 2nd World War.
The day ended with a buffet during which Ms. Tsakalis received more than one compliment on the splendid behavior of Socrates II students.
We are all very proud.
