The grade six class of Mmes Marie-Alixe Archer and Eirini Tourkomanoli of Socrates II received a different kind of education on the morning of November 11th.
The Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal, with our students accepted an invitation from the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society of Montréal to attend in a Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Côte-des-Neiges Cemetery. Surrounded by the headstones of sons and brothers fallen during one of the world’s greatest conflicts, the activities included a moment of silence on the beautiful sombre grounds of the cemetery followed by a medal ceremony for soldiers both living and those heavenly departed.
Flanked by Veterans, Homeland Security of the USA, Consular Agents from Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Greece, and various dignitaries our students welcomed the crowd in French and English.
The prologue was followed by an excerpt of the poem by the Nobel Prize Laureate, Odysseas Elytis: “A Heroic and Funeral Chant for The Lieutenant Lost in Albania” recited in Greek by our students.
The emotionally charged, yet heart-warming ceremony was brought to a close with a wreath laying gesture, with the students accompanyingMs. Spyridoula Makarouni, Vice-consul for Greece in Montréal, Mr. Spyros Montsenigos from the BOD of the HCGM and our very own Veteran of WWII,  Mr. Theofanis Montis.
